LTB 618/08 - Best Practice Initiative - TFSE Young Members' Survey 2008

Please find attached a report on the results of the TFSE young members' survey, which was produced by our online survey provider after the survey concluded on 30th June.

The report has been anonymised for data protection purposes.

Also attached for your information is a summary report which highlights the key findings from the survey.

The survey sought to establish what young members want from the CWU, whether we are doing enough to represent them, and what more we can do to engage them in union activity.

This project was initiated in pursuit of an objective set out in both the TFSE and the Branch Best Practice Action plans, which is to build for the future vitality of the union by finding new ways to attract and involve younger workers.

The response rate was relatively low at slightly over 1% of the T&FSE membership aged 30 or under.  However, some of the data is interesting and potentially very useful in terms of shaping our policy on youth engagement.  We are currently mapping the response to branch areas in order to see which areas have been able to engage more effectively with young members and why that has been the case.

Branches, youth officers and regional secretaries are invited to comment on the survey results and to make suggestions about how, in light of these results, we should progress our work with young members.

On the basis of comments received and the survey findings, the TFS Executive will develop a detailed plan for further action on this element of the Best Practice initiative.

The future of the CWU depends on having a strong base of active young members, and I would therefore encourage you to contribute to the planning and policy making process by sending in your comments.  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Please send all comments to Bill Taylor at CWU Head Office by Friday 5th September. email: btaylor@cwu.org

Yours sincerely

Andy Kerr

Deputy General Secretary (T&FS)
